So one star based on comparing it to the white dish. For me the Hawking minidish, the white one, worked way better.
I agree with your assessment of this antenna. While the antenna as shipped did improve the signal it was still too weak for a reasonable link.
I then cut the coax cable down to about 16 inches and my data rate jumped up to a reliable 3-5Mb/s, a respectible rate for 250 ft distance. The throughput was well under 1Mb/s.
Thanks Mr. I had a clear shot window-to-window and used a Belkin F5D7230 range extender with this antenna.
For those interested in modifying the cable you will need a reverse polarity SMA connector (J908-ND from digikey.com) and some good technician skills. Ulanday for your reverse-engineering.
My experience: I was trying to get a good signal over a 250 ft span between buildings.
I did a speed test prior to installing this antenna and after, noticed around 40% faster down and up, in fact matching my PC that's wired to the router. Internet pages would sometimes need multiple refreshes to connect. I'm currently using an old 802.11b router that I've had for over 5 years and have a wireless PC across the house. Connection speed was tolerable but that little 3 inch antenna on the back of the PCI card wasn't doing a whole lot.
I went from 65% signal with 62-64 db strength to 95%-100% with 48-50db strength. This atenna works. I then realized that this antenna is very sensitive to placement. My wifi setup is that my router is located next door on the ground floor of my parents house. The results were acceptable, but not remarkable. I ditched my homemade windsurfer on the router antenna (2db antenna) and placed it in a window ABOVE the screen.
I originally purchased this antenna with the hopes of setting it next to my tower and instantly seeing a dramatic increase in signal. Just don't expect it to work the fist place you put it. I then mounted the antenna above the screen and got what I wanted, 100% signal. Instead, I ended up with performance no better than the 5db rubber duck I had on the back of the computer.
I then bought an extension cable for my antenna and moved it to the window. Make sure you buy Hawking's coax extender, you might need it. On a last ditch attempt, I held the antenna as high as I could in the air and my signal jumped. My computer is setup on the second floor of the house next to it.
and even free s&h. What a product. The only thing that would make this the best product ever would be a window mount.A great price, fast ship from [.]. Nice. This is just the best. Went from 1 bar to 3 from low to good from 5k to 1 meg WiFi.
